The sentence follows the Shakahola forest deaths, in which hundreds of followers were found to have starved after being told to fast to meet Jesus.

A court in Kenya has sentenced the leader of a starvation cult to 200 years in prison, one of the heaviest sentences handed down in the country's history.

The case arose from the discovery in 2023 of mass graves in the Shakahola forest near the coastal town of Malindi, where hundreds of followers, including children, died after being urged to starve themselves in order to "meet Jesus".

The deaths shocked Kenya, a majority-Christian country, and led church leaders to call for stronger oversight of rogue preachers who exploit the faith of vulnerable people. Many pastors stressed that the teaching had nothing to do with the Gospel, which proclaims life, not death.
